Fuzzy Clock

The Time Collection explores different ways of representing and visualising time. Each application presents the same underlying temporal information in a different form, using language, numeral systems or visual patterns.

Design concept

Modern digital clocks present time with increasing precision, often displaying hours, minutes and seconds as exact numerical values. Fuzzy Clock takes the opposite approach. It expresses time approximately, using the informal phrases people commonly use in conversation.

Instead of displaying a precise value such as 11:27, the clock might say “nearly half past eleven.” A time shortly after five o’clock might simply become “just after five.”

The underlying time remains precise, but its presentation becomes less exact and more human. Fuzzy Clock explores whether everyday time can remain useful when numerical precision is replaced by natural language and approximation.

Reading the display

Fuzzy Clock converts the current time into a short English phrase. The wording changes as the hour progresses, using familiar expressions such as “just after,” “nearly,” “quarter past,” “half past” and “quarter to.”

The amount of approximation can be adjusted using the Fuzziness setting. This allows the clock to describe the time either a little more closely or a little more loosely.

Because the display uses ordinary language rather than a specialised numbering system or visual code, no decoding is required beyond understanding the phrase itself.
